Soft Tonneau Cover - Getting Good Value

Soft tonneau covers for trucks can be a great way to add the advantages of a tonneau cover to a truck. Not as durable as a hard cover and also not as secure, soft covers have several advantages. Consider the advantages as you choose a bed cover.

soft tonneau cover

There are many different brands and types of soft tonneau covers. One with some really cool features is the Extang Revolution Tonneau Cover. What makes this one really different is the tension design that keeps the cover tight. No snaps, no Velcro, no tongue and groove closure. Adjustable tension bows keep the vinyl cover tight and sealed. This one also includes built-in bows to keep the cover just the right shape for shedding rain. A clamp mount means fast installation and no drilling.

This one seems to be better, not just different.

Cost

A hard pickup cover can set you back well over a thousand dollars. A durable soft model can be yours for as little as a couple of hundred dollars, certainly less than half the cost of a hard cover, maybe even less than a fourth.

Shipping

Most soft covers ship in a simple box while many hard covers are bulky and most ship by freight carriers instead of by regular mail or parcel service. Check on shipping. Granted many more expensive hard covers do include free shipping though. Better check and be sure.

Installation

Try installing a one piece fiberglass top by yourself, especially on a windy day! By contrast, soft tonneau covers are much easier to handle and many require few if any tools for installation. Get your friends to help you on some other project. You can do this one by yourself.

The most common soft covers are rolled toward the front of the truck to open the bed. There are other styles that fold forward and even a type that hinges forward. The hinged cover is built with vinyl over supporting bows somewhat like a hard cover. Any soft style will be lighter and easier to handle than most hard models.

Security

A lockable hard pickup cover is the ultimate in security for your stuff. But a soft tonneau adds some security too. Soft covers certainly put your cargo out of sight and under cover from rain and the elements. And with a soft cover you can easily roll the cover back whenever you want to haul taller cargo than you could handle with most hard shell hinged covers. Try hauling a couch or refrigerator with most hinged hard covers. Even a small lawnmower is a challenge with a hard hinged cover.

Gas Mileage

Does adding a tonneau cover improve gas mileage? It seems that covering that box with a nice slick lid would surely significantly improve fuel mileage, but so far I can't find results of any tests of that idea. A truck with a nice soft tonneau cover surely looks slicker though.
